When You Can No Longer Keep Your Pet

We understand that sometimes, despite your best intentions, life circumstances may make it difficult to continue caring for your pet. If you are facing the heart-wrenching decision to surrender your animal, please know that you’re not alone—and we’re here to help however we can.

How the Process Works

Submit Application

You must be the legal owner of the animal to apply. Please complete the owner surrender application as thoroughly as possible.

Application Review

Our team will review your application and determine if we’re able to assist. If approved, we will contact you to schedule a surrender intake appointment.

Proof of Ownership

You must be the legal owner of the animal and provide proof of ownership. We cannot accept animals surrendered by individuals without full legal rights.

Surrender Appointment & Contract

If your surrender is approved, you’ll be asked to sign a surrender contract transferring ownership to the Appalachian Highlands Humane Society.

Important Notice

Please Read Before Applying

Please keep in mind that submitting a surrender application does not guarantee intake. We are a limited-admission facility, and our ability to take in animals depends on available space, resources, and the specific needs of your pet.

About Us

Appalachian Highlands Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no government funding and are not affiliated with national organizations such as the ASPCA, Humane Society of the United States, or Humane World. We rely entirely on donations from our community to fund the care and placement of the animals we take in.

While a donation is not required, it is greatly appreciated if we are able to accept your pet. Your support helps us provide food, medical care, and a second chance to animals in need.
