serving our mission

Serving on Our Board is a Commitment to the Mission

The Appalachian Highlands Humane Society is led by a working Board of Directors—a group of individuals actively engaged in the life and work of the organization. Board service is not passive; it is a hands-on leadership role grounded in commitment to our mission and the animals in our care.

Our board members do more than attend meetings. They contribute their time, support fundraising efforts, engage with the community, and maintain a clear understanding of the day-to-day realities of animal welfare.

What It Means to Serve

Serving on the AHHS Board of Directors means being actively involved in supporting the organization and its mission. Board members contribute their time, expertise, and energy to help advance our work and strengthen our impact in the community.

This includes staying connected to the organization, participating in initiatives, and maintaining an understanding of the work happening within the shelter and the broader community we serve.

Board Member Expectations

• Attend and actively participate in board meetings
• Serve on committees or special initiatives
• Support fundraising and donor engagement
• Act as ambassadors for AHHS in the community
• Maintain an understanding of shelter operations and animal care
• Be willing to engage with the hands-on realities of rescue work

Preferred Background

Strong candidates typically have an existing relationship with AHHS through volunteering, fostering, adopting, donating, or participating in events.

The most successful board members are those who have experienced our work firsthand and understand both the rewards and the realities of animal rescue.

Important to Know

Board service at AHHS is not an entry point into the organization. It is generally a continuation of demonstrated involvement and commitment to our mission.

Board Election Cycle

Board members are elected annually in January.

Interest expressed outside of this cycle is encouraged to begin with involvement in our organization before being considered for future board service.
